In Search of a Phobia Cure

Is it my imagination or are more people suffering from phobias in the modern day? Perhaps this is the case, perhaps not; certainly there are more people who are willing to talk about having a phobia or suffering from anxiety. Phobias no longer have a stigma associated with them, and rightly so.

It is inevitable that when you live in an environment where you travel more or move in different circles more frequently that anxieties and phobias are more likely to arise. Our grandparents and great grandparents lived very different lives to that which we live; when you live in a more limited environment you more easily stay within the confines of your comfort zone. There is less going on which might give rise to a phobic reaction.

But the anxiety response does indeed date back to our more ancient ancestors. The surge of adrenalin which we experience in times of threat (commonly known as the “fight or flight” response) has remained with us throughout the course of our evolution. The forms of threat have changed, but our natural and instinctive physiological response has remained the same. In more primitive times this was essential; you had to be prepared to fight or run when faced with a hungry beast in search of a meaty dinner.

As a result of natural selection, those who had the most efficient “fight or flight” response ended up as the survivors, and they have passed these genes down to you and me. And so whenever we perceive something which might be construed as a threat, this natural reaction automatically kicks in and your heart starts to beat faster and your entire body goes on red alert.

This reaction is good and necessary, so long as the perceived threat is indeed a threat. It is not good when the perceived threat gives rise to a fear of flying, or a fear of heights, or claustrophobia or perhaps even just thin air. When one takes a step back and sees the sequence of events which leads to the creation of a phobia, it is easier to see how to find a phobia cure.

When you understand that the physical sensations experienced are merely your body’s natural reaction to a perceived threat, you also appreciate that these physical sensations are “hard-wired” and that they are not going to change. The point at which change can take place is in how one perceives the threat as a threat. To cure a phobia one has to step back and learn to see things from a different angle, from a different perspective. The anxiety response will remain dormant so long as the perceptions you are making are not seen as a threat.

Therefore those in search of a phobia cure need to seek a way in which to see airplanes, spiders, heights or whatever else in a different light. You will know at a logical and conscious level how you should be thinking about them. But the emotional and subconscious response over-rides this logic. And so the obvious place in which to go to affect your phobia cure is to the area of your subconscious mind.

Hypnosis allows you to intentionally access the workings of your subconscious mind. With hypnosis you can learn to take a step back and see things from a different angle. This is why hypnosis is becoming well known as the quickest and easiest way in which you can cure a phobia.

People who are afraid of flying are often mistakenly regarded as a homogenous group in which all individuals suffer the same fears. Most people who fear flying are usually worried about various matters related to flight-safety.

However, a significant group of fearful fliers suffer from claustrophobia – a fear of enclosed spaces.

Claustrophobia is a fear of going into places it might be difficult, or impossible to leave when one wants and includes fear of being in a place that might have a shortage of air.

These feelings may be experienced in a wide variety of places – an elevator, a theater, a shopping center, an underground train, taxis or car, a train or bus, not to mention various facilities in amusement parks and other enclosed places.

Fear of flying in this context derives from the claustrophobic person’s apprehension that the airplane is a closed-in space – and there is no way of getting out of it. This makes claustrophobic feelings in a plane more severe than in most other enclosed places. While one can step out of a shopping mall or a theater, and stop the bus and get off, this cannot be done on a plane. From the moment the doors are closed one has no control over the situation, the pilots are isolated from the passenger cabin and it is not possible to stop and get off.

It is estimate that 35% of those who are afraid of flying and avoid flying are claustrophobics. Another word, their main concern is the fact that the aircraft is closed. This is why many of the Relaxed Flight seminar participants suffer from claustrophobia.

If the sufferer also gets a feeling that the air might run out it is easy to understand why the fear of enclosed spaces is more intense on a fight than anywhere else. Claustrophobics therefore avoid flying as much as possible. Some tell me they are willing to take very short flights – say up to an hour long – to shorten nightmare, but are not prepared to even consider a long flight.

After years of dealing with fear of flying and helping so many, I can say that there is a great difference between those who are afraid of flying because of claustrophobia, and those who fear it for safety reasons. Anyone can easily recognize if, and to what extent, he or she suffers in

enclosed places. If you avoid elevators, or look for exit signs and stroll mainly near the exits a shopping mall, or find it important for you to sit on the theater aisle rather than in a middle-row seat in the theater, you are probably suffering from claustrophobia.

Up to the time of flight, differences in behavior among individuals afraid of flying are not great – for example, they may all feel an increasing sense of pressure the closer the flight gets. But the differences during the flight become most significant.

Here are a few examples.

People who are afraid of flying for safety reasons become more fearful the longer the flight lasts. They constantly look at their watches and wish the flight would end; they cannot eat or get up, they are worried by every glance of the 1 of 4 about claustrophobia cabin crew, they are on the verge of a panic attack every time the plane enters turbulence and shakes, they yearn for explanations from the cockpit and there is no question of them watching a movie or napping. As the end of the flight nears, their dread begins to wane and when the descent starts they may even smile with relief. They feel that if the flight is almost over and nothing has happened, there is a good chance it may end safely. The landing is accompanied by a feeling of victory – the statistics were wrong, apparently,

and nothing happened.

However, with claustrophobics things happen differently. They are very careful about their seating arrangement and will always pick an isle seat, preferably near the door. Claustrophobics have two main crisis points on the flight – one the beginning and one at the end. Already in the terminal they are wondering “will I come home again or not.” At the crucial moment of boarding the plane the question “am I staying here or not?” torments them. The captain’s instruction to the crew to close the doors is their moment of truth, for it is their last chance to escape from the plane.

Many claustrophobics cannot stand the pressure and may decide to leave the airport, regardless of the trip’s importance – be it a honeymoon or a family reunion or a major business trip. Others who are braver may make it to the departure gate before turning back.

I always explain to air crews on my courses that a passenger who wants to get off the plane just before the doors close is probably suffering from claustrophobia. But what is interesting is that once claustrophobics decide to remain on the plane, they adjust to their new environment quite quickly. They adjust to the reality of being on a flight and from a certain point on they are normal passengers who walk around, eat, maybe even watch a movie or doze. Like many who fear flying however, they will avoid going into the toilet during flight – the toilet booth is tiny and cramped and cannot be left unlocked. Their trick is to avoid drinking on flight so to reduce the need to use the toilet. During the flight claustrophobics have faith in the crew; they have no safety related anxieties and are usually not bothered by turbulence.

But all is not well for long. As end of the flight nears and the “normal” fearful fliers start smiling with relief, the claustrophobic will start fretting about how to “get out of here as fast as possible” after landing. Claustrophobics have a difficult time after the plane lands and starts to taxi slowly to the terminal. The fear of closed-in places starts to mount again and they become more anxious to get off the plane immediately. Their nightmare is that the plane might be delayed in getting to the terminal or that there will be a long wait for the doors to open. The moment the plane stops and all the passengers rise from their seats and fill the isles can even trigger a panic attack.

I have describe the differences between fearful fliers in a general way, but of course each person can react individually and differently to the various flight situations.

I mentioned that as part of my specialization in fear of flying, I give courses on the subject to air crews. Among other things, I train them to recognize and distinguish passengers suffering from claustrophobia from those who are afraid of flying for safety reasons, and I explain how critical the seating arrangement is to these people. I emphasize the importance of helping them get off the plane first, even if they are not sitting in the front seats.

Important Tips for Flying With Pets

Traveling with your pet can be one of the most rewarding experiences of a vacation. It takes away your worry when it comes to leaving your pet in the care of your neighbor or relative. It also saves you the money of having to put it in a kennel. However, the potential for things to go wrong while transporting your animal is high if you do not follow state and airline rules closely. But have no fear; things aren’t as bad as they often sound when reading through them on a government website. The regulations are actually fairly easy to follow.

Once your pet is old enough to travel (8 weeks and weaned) the first step is acquiring a travel kennel. In most instances your pet will need to be checked, it will not be allowed to travel with you into the passenger cabin (There are a few exceptions that will be addressed later). This means of passage requires a sturdy kennel to ensure your pet’s safety. There are a few requirements in terms of kennel design that are put in place to make the safety of your animal a certainty. The kennel must meet a minimum standard for size, strength, sanitation and ventilation based on your animal’s size and breed. They also must have a floor that will not allow any sort of leaking. Other than the floor, the kennel should be ventilated. 14% of the wall space needs to be ventilated in order to ensure proper air flow, allowing your pet to be comfortable. Speaking of comfort, your pet must have enough space to sit, stand, lay and breathe comfortably within the space provided. Another aspect of space and comfort is how many pets can be stored within one kennel. It is possible to store multiple animals of similar species and size within one compartment, but the maximum size allowed is two puppies or kittens that are under six months of age. Other important rules relate more to the airline’s ability to care for your pets then the kennel itself. You will need to have a health certificate from a certified veterinarian signed within ten days of travel to prove that your pet is able to travel safely. Similar paperwork is required for your pet to travel home, but the original certificate should suffice. Another health issue comes into play if you will be traveling for over twenty-four hours. Under those circumstances you will be required to post, on the outside of the kennel, all instructions for feeding, watering and giving of medication for your pet. You also must make sure that the kennel is outfitted with a handle or any other such device so that the luggage handlers can easily transport your pet.

With the major requirements met, you are ready to travel with your animal. But meeting these needs alone will not ensure that you have an enjoyable experience. They should ensure safety, not necessarily pleasure. Be sure to carry a leash with you. This way you can take your pet out and let it walk just before it is loaded onto the flight, and just after it gets off. A way to simplify your trip is to try and keep flights as direct as possible. Shortening the time between destinations will keep your pet more comfortable. Also, it would be wise to try and avoid traveling at especially busy times. This will decrease the likelihood of luggage getting sent to the wrong places, and your pet ending up in a different city then you. To further avoid confusion place your pet’s name on the outside of your travel kennel in an easily readable manner. This will make identification much easier not only for you, but also for any airport employees. It will help them to treat the pet as more then just luggage as they can address it by name and better help it be more comfortable and relaxed. When picking up your pet, after the flight, make sure it stays in the kennel until after you have left the air port. Between the crowds, the stores and other diversions, the airport can be a challenging place to release your animal. Just be ready with your leash as soon as you get outside.

With all of these precautions in mind, traveling with your pet should be simple. Be sure to arrive at the airport with plenty of time to stow your pet comfortably. It is also very important to call your specific airline well in advance to make sure that you are informed of any specific regulations that they might have. “radar defenses” against the daily bombardment of marketing
messages?

Take a minute and count up the advertising methods which fight
for your attention (and money) every day. Just the basic list
includes:

· Yellow page ads

· Newspaper and magazine ads

· Postcards, catalogs, and direct mail circulars in your “snail
mail” box

· Radio pitches interrupting the flow of your favorite songs

· TV ads - about 20 minutes worth per hour now

· Hundreds of storefronts, “mega” malls, and strip malls

· Highway billboards by the thousands

· Circulars hung on your doorknob

· Illegal signs on stop signs and telephone poles

· Legitimate email messages

· Spam email or UCE (unsolicited commercial email)

messages. Like trapped rats, people develop defenses against
this never-ending onslaught. They throw up a wall or a “radar
defense” that goes into action the minute they smell a “pitch”

So how can you get around this psychological wall against the

business as an expert.

2. Second, you must reduce their fears about doing business with
you.

Doing these two things will get you past their defenses and

win someone’s attention, raise your credibility, and lower their
fear factor all at the same time? The one-word answer really
